So, my good friend Wacko [link] hosts a bunch of interactive game shows at a convention here in town called Anime Festival Orlando [link] under the moniker of Wheldon Smiley.

Wacko is graduating from film school this month, and while that means great things for his career, it also means that this will be the last AFO he will be involved with in any large capacity. So, knowing this, he wanted to give his alter-ego a cool "send off" in the con guide.

Taking a gigantic nod from the infamous "Spider-Man No More!" cover from Amazing Spider-Man #50, we decided to collaborate on this piece. Wacko provided the inspiration and artistic direction for this image, while I drew up the image itself. The image shows Wheldon sulking away with his trademark plaid jacket, bowtie, and wig in the trash can. The ghostly image in the background is of his arch-rival Wally Allgood.

Drawn with (gasp!) a ball-point pen on a standard sheet of printer paper, I scanned it and touched it up and colored and composed it in Photoshop CS2. All in all, it was about six hours of work over a very long night. :D

Once this was finished, I sent it off to Wacko so that he could add in all of the text and other graphics necessary to turn this pin-up into a proper ad. If you'd like to see what the final result was, you can check it out on Wacko's website: [link]

P.S. - Yes, I know that Wheldon still has a full head of hair even though his wig is in the trash. It was totally intentional. Wacko and I just thought it would be funny if Wheldon wore a wig over his identical-looking natural hair.

Wow James! I love the background! Great job as usual.

I can't believe you had the time to draw/color this before AFO. We won't be able to make it this year, but good luck! Hope you made "Anime Name-That-Tune" hard!

Luckily, I had all of my ducks in a row about a month ago, so making this picture actually wasn't as inconvenient as it could have been. Either way, I'm still surprised we were able to pull it off so quickly. I hope it turns out good on the actual con guide printing.

Sorry to hear you won't be coming to the show. There's always next year! And don't worry about "Tune", it'll be challenging enough. It's probably the only game show at AFO that actually requires you to have watched some frakkin' anime. :D
